Beyond the Gym: Being Mindful About Your Health
By Cynthia Fodell Mott
I spent last week in the San Juan Mountains outside of Ouray, Colorado. It goes without saying that leaving the seemingly endless heat and humidity of a Houston summer was a gift. Even more special was the time I got to spend with my daughter and her 3-month old, Sveva. We rode the mountain trails on horses so honed and well trained that I would opt to take them to a gathering over many of the people I know. My daughter is an outstanding equestrian and was patient with me in her education of a skill that when I had it, was lackluster at best!
Heaven’s Gate ranch is their indescribable retreat: the scenery reflects the magic and wonder of God’s hand as does the special attention to finely crafted meals, all lovingly prepared from the freshest local ingredients. The home rivals any five-star lodging, with comfy white waffle robes, toiletries and crisp linens that when combined with the fresh mountain air through open windows, offers a level of sleep that I am certain I hadn’t experienced since I was six months old.
The second day of my stay, the hosts came down with severe summer colds. They quarantined themselves in their rooms for fear of passing the virus onto others most especially baby Sveva, who came into this world in challenging circumstances during her first moments of birth. The attention and tedious process that followed included a diligent and continuous wiping down with an antibacterial agent of every surface that may have been in contact with the cold virus, including refrigerator doors, countertops and doorknobs. As a result of this care and ongoing attention to detail, no one else caught the virus. This process went on for 4 days. Initially it seemed that chasing every movement and surface that may have been touched was a rather fruitless endeavor. It was not. No other guest in the home was infected.
This account may seem like much ado about “nothing.” But it’s not. The reality is that diseases we thought eradicated years ago: polio, measles, tuberculosis, whooping cough and mumps are all flourishing in our respective communities. This fact. in tandem with my recent experience, led me to consider my daily routine: the multi-story buildings I frequent for client meetings, industry conferences, sporting events and shopping malls. We’ve all seen the exposes’ reporting on 5-star hotel rooms ridden with harmful bacteria, filthy handrails, and of course, bathrooms.
There is finally a solution to this dangerous dilemma in the United States, one that has been implemented throughout Europe and China for almost ten years. This product offers a non-toxic film with antimicrobial properties that continuously cleanses the escalator handrails and other surfaces, offering a sanitary and highly effective advertising channel that is both environmentally responsible and protects the health of our citizens. This unique product is easy to remove and install multiple times with no damage or residue on the handrail. This protective film guards against numerous bacteria, including E. coli that lives and grows on escalator handrails and other surfaces we encounter on a daily basis.
